New Generator for City of Florence

The City of Florence has received a new 52-kilowatt portable diesel generator through a $69,585 grant from the Oregon Resilience Hubs and Network program. The equipment will support the city’s emergency operations, particularly during power outages that impact wastewater pump stations. Florence operates 39 pump stations that help move wastewater to the city’s treatment plant. While three of those have permanent backup power, the rest rely on a limited number of portable generators. The new unit adds critical capacity during emergencies, helping crews prioritize high-flow stations and freeing resources for other response efforts. The grant was part of a $10 million statewide initiative funded by House Bill 3409.

Rhody Days

The 118th Florence Rhododendron Festival returns May 15 through 18, continuing a tradition that dates back over a century. Hosted by the Florence Area Chamber of Commerce, the event is Oregon’s second-oldest flower festival and draws thousands to the coast each year. This year’s theme, “Rhodies on the River,” highlights the region’s natural beauty. The festival features parades, a classic car show and cruise, carnival, vendor fair, and arts events. It unofficially kicks off the local tourism season, which brings in nearly $300 million annually and supports over half of Florence’s workforce. Activities begin May 10 with the coronation of festival royalty. For full event details, visit RhodyDays.net.
