ODOT Layoffs
On Monday, Governor Tina Kotek and the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) announced the first wave of layoffs—483 positions—out of an anticipated total of 600–700, marking the largest workforce reduction in Oregon state government history no transportation funding passed in the 2025 legislative session, a second wave looms in early 2026 unless lawmakers act. Governor Kotek emphasized the cutbacks as an emergency for the state’s road system, warning, “This is not business as usual,” and noting severe impacts on essential services such as pothole repair, snow and ice removal, and wildfire‑related vegetation clearing. ODOT’s mitigation plan includes reducing material purchases, delaying vehicle replacements, keeping senior staff, and closing fewer stations. Still, this summer and winter Oregonians will likely see scaled‑back maintenance, delayed striping and signage, less litter pickup, and slower emergency responses. Governor Kotek continues to push for legislative action or a special session to refill the budget gap and prevent harsher impacts to public safety and transportation across the state
