Child Car Concerns
Child care remains a major concern for Florence families, and Oregon Senators Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden are pushing for federal action. They’ve cosponsored the Child Care for Working Families Act—a bill aimed at making child care more affordable, expanding access, and raising wages for child care workers. Merkley says families in rural areas like Florence are telling him it’s too expensive and too hard to find care. Wyden says the bill would cap child care costs at 7% of family income, expand preschool options, and support local providers. The average annual cost of infant care in Oregon is nearly $20,000—well above tuition at most state universities.
Water Safety
Two new laws are aiming to strengthen Oregon’s water protections and improve transparency for communities relying on groundwater. Senate Bill 1154 updates the state’s Groundwater Quality Protection Act, giving agencies better tools to prevent and respond to contamination. House Bill 3525 requires water quality testing for rental homes using private wells in designated groundwater management areas. In Florence, where residents rely on the vulnerable North Florence Dunal Aquifer for drinking water, these protections are especially critical to ensuring long-term safety and supply.
