Ems Over Hops

The Emeralds rallied late to defeat Hillsboro 7-2. Trailing 2-1 in the seventh, Eugene strung together eight straight 2-out base runners to spark a six-run inning. Damian Bravo tied the game, Jose Ramos put the Ems ahead, and Charlie Szykowny drove in two more as part of his three-RBI night. Szykowny also homered in the first for the second straight game. Starter Charlie McDaniel allowed just one earned run over five innings, while Liam Simon earned the win and Ryan Vanderhei closed it out. Eugene has now won three straight and improves to 36-13 in the second half.

The Oregon Ducks continued preseason practice Tuesday inside Autzen Stadium. Afterward, offensive coordinator Will Stein and quarterbacks Dante Moore, Austin Novosad, and Luke Moga spoke with reporters. Stein said the offense is “getting there” after the defense dominated the first scrimmage, but he’s seen improvement since then. He described the quarterback competition as “really competitive” with players supporting each other while pushing hard. Stein also reflected on last season’s slow starts, saying the focus this year is simplifying the playbook early and letting players execute confidently to get into a rhythm from the opening game.
