Viking Football

Senior Will Johnson scored a touchdown in every quarter Friday night, leading the Siuslaw Vikings to a 48-13 win over South Umpqua at Hans Petersen Field. Johnson found the end zone three times on the ground and once on a 19-yard pass from sophomore quarterback Jericho Lake, who also added a rushing score and another touchdown pass. Senior Tom Morgan struck twice — once on offense and again with a 47-yard interception return. The Vikings improve to 3-2 overall and 1-0 in league play. They’ll travel to Douglas next Friday.

Cross Country

Siuslaw’s cross country teams turned in solid performances at Saturday’s Harrier Classic in Albany. The boys finished 11th out of 32 schools, and the girls placed 13th of 25. Sophomore Bentley Nelson led the boys in 16:36, and senior Adylin Holbrook paced the girls at 21:08. Most of the Vikings’ top runners were freshmen and sophomores. Siuslaw competes next Friday in Portland at the Rose City Championship.

OSU Makes Mid-Season Changes

Oregon State’s athletic director Scott Barnes says he shares the frustration of fans after the Beavers’ 27-23 road loss to Appalachian State on Saturday, which dropped OSU to 0-6 for the season. The program is under review, and immediate changes are coming. Head coach Trent Bray announced he has relieved special teams coordinator Jamie Christian of his duties, calling this the right moment for a shift. Christian had been in his second season. Barnes says with half the season left, there’s still time to turn things around.

Sailor Football

Friday night the Mapleton Sailor 6 man football team lost their 6th straight falling to Jewell 47-13.
