Helicopter Returns to Newport
Oregon’s U.S. Senators Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden, along with Representative Val Hoyle, announced that an essential Coast Guard rescue helicopter will remain stationed at the Newport Air Facility. According to the lawmakers, Acting Coast Guard Commandant Admiral Kevin Lunday made the commitment during a recent call, noting the aircraft’s importance as crab season begins. Senator Merkley said public pressure and court action played key roles, adding that he and Senator Wyden stressed the helicopter’s lifesaving history in Newport. Wyden called the decision a major win for fishermen, residents, and visitors, crediting local officials and the Newport Fishermen’s Wives for pressing the issue. Representative Hoyle said the community’s persistence ensured the helicopter’s return, emphasizing its role in protecting crews performing one of the most dangerous jobs in the world. Officials from the Coast Guard and the Department of Homeland Security confirmed the helicopter will stay in Newport.
King Tide Weekend
King tides return to Florence today, bringing powerful ocean views and dramatic coastal conditions through Sunday. While the waves draw crowds to popular viewpoints like Heceta Head Lighthouse, the Sea Lion Caves Overlook, Driftwood Shores, and Old Town, officials urge caution. These extreme high tides can be unpredictable and dangerous, with the risk of sneaker waves and floating debris, including large logs that can shift suddenly. Each year lives are lost along the Oregon Coast due to the ocean’s strength. Observers are encouraged to enjoy the spectacle from a safe distance and remain aware of changing conditions.
