Siuslaw senior Jacob Mann placed third at 215 pounds and senior Ali Ijaz finished seventh at 157 at the Sierra Classic wrestling tournament in Reno on Tuesday. Mann went 5-1 over two days, scoring 23-and-a-half team points, while Ijaz posted a 6-2 record with four pins and added 17 points. The Vikings finished 44th overall among 94 schools from seven states. Siuslaw is scheduled to compete Saturday at the Phil Smith Memorial Tournament in Junction City.
Sailor Basketball
The Mapleton Sailors defeated the Oakridge Warriors last night, using strong defense to hold Oakridge scoreless in the first half. Lucie Burruss led the Sailors with 17 points, 8 assists, and 2 steals, followed by Abbi Galvan Mendez with 11 points and 6 rebounds. Freshman Amira Green added 10 points. The final score was Mapleton 61, Oakridge 13. The Sailors return home Friday, January 3, hosting Eddyville with tip-off set for 5:30 p.m. the Mapleton Boys fell to Oakridge in a tight match 66-62.
Orange Bowl
The Oregon Ducks will take the field relatively early tomorrow morning in the Orange Bowl. They will face Texas Tech for the right to move on in the College Football Playoffs. The game will have a 9 am kickoff with a pregame beginning at 7:30 on KCST.
