Missing Teen May Be In Florence Area

The Oregon Department of Human Services is asking for the public’s help to locate a missing teenager who may be in the Florence area. Michael M. Newton, age 16, was reported missing from Eugene on January 3, 2026. ODHS Child Welfare officials say they believe Michael may be at risk and are trying to assess his safety. He is believed to be with his mother, Aroya Newton, and/or her partner, Noah Miller, possibly in the Cottage Grove, Mapleton, or Florence areas. Anyone with information is asked to call 911 or the Oregon Child Abuse Hotline at 1-855-503-SAFE. A photo of Michael has been posted on the Coast Radio news website.

Hunger Levels Rising

New data shows hunger in Oregon is at record levels, with 1 in 7 adults and 1 in 6 children facing food insecurity. According to Oregon Food Bank, visits to food pantries have increased by more than 50% over the past 2 years. Food Bank President Andrea Williams delivered her annual State of Hunger Address today in Salem, urging lawmakers to invest in technology and staffing to protect SNAP benefits. She referenced last fall’s delayed SNAP payments, when more than 700,000 Oregonians temporarily lost access to food assistance. Williams said food banks help, but cannot replace SNAP, noting the program provides 7 meals for every 1 supplied by food banks.

Lane Community College and the Lane Community College Employees Federation have reached a tentative agreement in economic reopener negotiations. The agreement includes a 3 percent cost-of-living adjustment for classified staff and updated budget exigency language aimed at providing financial clarity for the college during potential fiscal challenges. College officials say the agreement reflects a collaborative effort to support classified employees while maintaining long-term financial stability. Union leadership says the deal recognizes the important contributions of classified staff and demonstrates the value of cooperation in negotiations.
