Scam Warnings
The Lane County Sheriff’s Office is warning the public about ongoing phone scams targeting the community. Officials say they will never ask for money by phone, text, or email, and will never call about missed jury duty. Scammers often claim to be sheriff’s sergeants, saying there are warrants, missed jury duty, or legal issues, and may threaten arrest or offer to take bail money. In some cases, calls appear to come from official phone numbers. If you receive a suspicious call, officials say to hang up and contact Lane County Dispatch at 541-682-4150, option 1.
Missing Teen Update
The Oregon Department of Human Services has issued an update in the search for a missing Eugene teenager. Michael M. Newton, age 16, was reported missing on February 3, 2026. The ODHS Child Welfare Division says Michael may be at risk and is actively trying to locate him to assess his safety. Michael is believed to be with his mother, Aroya Newton, and or her partner, Noah Miller, possibly in the Cottage Grove, Mapleton, or Florence areas. He is 5’9”, weighs 240 pounds, with dark brown hair and blue-grey eyes. Anyone with information is asked to call 911 or the Oregon Child Abuse Hotline at 1-855-503-7233. there is a photo of Michael on the Coast Radio Website.
250th Celebration Planning
As the nation prepares to mark the 250th anniversary of America’s founding, a local group in Florence is beginning plans for a community celebration. Organizers say they are looking for residents interested in helping shape how America 250 is observed locally. A public planning meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, February 18, at 4:30 p.m. in the Bromley Room at the Siuslaw Public Library.
