Mapleton Water District
At last night’s Mapleton Water District meeting, officials highlighted several major infrastructure and funding projects totaling millions of dollars. A $900,000 water tank rehabilitation project is moving into the final USDA application phase, while a $37,500 security fencing project has advanced through the state legislature. Additional grant applications include support for operations, staffing, and a $1.8 million Riverview Avenue water line replacement. Officials also reported progress on a $1 million sewer system upgrade project, as the district continues pursuing state and federal funding opportunities. Vice chair Art Donnely says the water system will require much more in the way of upgrades and replacement, a more than 29 million dollar investment, something he says will be difficult to fund. Donnelly will discuss the problem the district faces during the April edition of Our Town.
Transient Lodging Tax Increase
Oregon lawmakers have passed a bipartisan bill to increase the state’s lodging tax by 1.25%, directing more than $30 million annually to conservation and wildlife programs. Supporters say the measure overcame early opposition, with more than 100 businesses backing the effort. Advocates note Oregon’s outdoor recreation economy generates $16 billion each year and supports nearly 192,000 jobs. The funding will support efforts like wildlife protection, anti-poaching, and invasive species response. House Bill 4134 now awaits Governor Tina Kotek’s signature.
Safe St. Patrick’s Day and Spring Break
As Oregonians prepare for spring break and St. Patrick’s Day celebrations, the Oregon Health Authority is urging people to plan ahead and drink responsibly. Officials say alcohol-related crashes remain a serious concern, with 200 deaths in 2023—about 34% of all traffic fatalities. OHA recommends using a designated driver or rideshare, pacing alcohol consumption, and watching out for others. Health officials also note alcohol is a leading cause of preventable death in the state, linked to chronic disease and injury.
