Gas Prices Still Rising; Job Connections Reopens; Scotch Broom Removal; Remove Those Studded Tires

Gas Prices Still Rising

Gas prices are surging just as spring break travel ramps up, with drivers paying the highest prices for the season since 2022. The national average has climbed to $3.79 a gallon, while Oregon now sits at $4.54, and Florence slightly higher at $4.55. AAA says rising crude oil prices—linked to conflict in Iran and shipping disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz—are the main driver. Oil has jumped from around $67 to $95 per barrel in recent weeks. Seasonal factors like refinery maintenance and the switch to summer-blend fuel are also pushing prices higher. Officials say it’s too soon to know if planned releases from the nation’s oil reserves will bring relief.

Job Connections Reopens

Goodwill Job Connections has reopened in Florence after a period of closure, once again offering free employment assistance to local residents. The program, located inside the Goodwill Store on Highway 101, helps individuals overcome barriers to employment with services like resume building, job search support, and interview preparation. Organizers say the goal is to help people become job-ready and connect with opportunities in the community. Job Connections is open to the public and serves individuals at all experience levels. More information is available by visiting the Florence Goodwill location.

Scotch Broom Removal

Volunteers are needed Saturday, March 28 from 10 a.m. to noon at the North Jetty of Siuslaw River County Park to help remove invasive Scotch broom. Organizers say the fast-spreading plant is a major problem along the Oregon Coast, crowding out native vegetation and increasing wildfire risk due to its dense, dry growth. Work will take place near the parking area on flat, sandy terrain, and organizers say strong turnout helps make a big impact. Volunteers should bring gloves, water, snacks, and tools if available, though some will be provided. Weather updates will be posted Friday on Save the Oregon Dunes platforms.

Remove Those Studded Tires

Oregon drivers have about two weeks left to remove studded tires before the April 1 deadline. State law allows their use through March 31, but starting April 1, drivers can face a $165 fine if studs are still on their vehicles. ODOT urges drivers not to wait until the last minute and recommends switching to other traction options like chains if needed. Officials note spring weather can still bring snow, but crews will respond to changing conditions. ODOT also encourages drivers to consider studless or all-weather tires, which provide good traction without causing as much road damage.
