School to Offer Tours To Bolster Bond Request
A bond measure on the May 19th ballot is drawing attention in the Siuslaw School District. Measure 379 would fund construction of a new Siuslaw High School at an estimated cost of 138 million dollars, to be paid by local taxpayers. Supporters say the current facility has deteriorated to the point where remodeling is no longer financially practical. Opponents, however, argue the added tax burden would be difficult for property owners. In an effort to provide transparency, the district is offering guided tours of the existing high school so residents can see conditions firsthand. Tours are scheduled for Thursday, April 16th at 6 p.m., Saturday, April 18th at 2 p.m., and Tuesday, April 21st at 6 p.m. Each tour will last about an hour and include time for questions and answers.
Oregon DOR Extending Filing Deadline
The Oregon Department of Revenue is extending the state income tax filing deadline for certain federal employees affected by the ongoing government shutdown. That includes Department of Homeland Security personnel, such as TSA agents working at Oregon airports. Eligible taxpayers will receive an automatic 30-day extension to file and pay without penalty. The new deadline is May 15th, 2026. The IRS has already announced a similar federal extension. While Oregon typically follows federal extensions, the state does not automatically waive penalties or interest, and some taxpayers may still need to request a waiver.
Distracted Driving/Alcohol Awareness Months
Lane County officials say impaired and distracted driving are major factors in a rise in serious crashes on rural roads. Between 2018 and 2022, 220 people were killed or seriously injured, with roadway departures the most common type of crash and alcohol the leading contributing factor. April marks both National Alcohol Awareness Month and Distracted Driving Awareness Month. Officials say activities like cell phone use take attention away from the road and put everyone at risk. With spring events increasing, residents are encouraged to plan ahead—use a designated driver, limit alcohol consumption, and avoid distractions behind the wheel.
