Viking Victory

A banged-up Siuslaw Viking football team, playing with ten new starters, rolled past Newport Friday, 28-3. Siuslaw trailed 3-nothing early before taking a 14-3 lead into halftime. Quarterback Jericho Lake connected with Coleman Weidman for a third-quarter touchdown as the Vikings improved to 2-and-1. Siuslaw hosts Elmira Saturday at one o’clock.

Lady Viks Soccer

The Siuslaw girls soccer team dropped its only preleague match Friday, falling to seventh-ranked Oregon Episcopal School 7-nothing in Portland. The Lady Vikings had not played since an August 27th jamboree, after a scheduled match with Pleasant Hill was cancelled because of air quality. Siuslaw opens league play Thursday against Lakeview in Grants Pass.

Cross Country

The Siuslaw boys placed fourth among 21 teams Saturday at the Ash Creek Invitational cross country meet in Monmouth. Junior Henry Stone led the Vikings, finishing fourth out of 160 runners, while Bentley Nelson placed 15th. The Siuslaw girls finished eighth among 17 teams, led by Claire McNeill. The Vikings compete next Saturday at the Northwest Classic at Lane Community College.

College Football

Oregon suffered its first loss of the season Saturday, falling 39-31 at Oklahoma State. The Ducks rallied from a 10-point second-half deficit to take a 31-30 fourth-quarter lead, but the Cowboys scored the final nine points, and a late Oregon fumble ended the comeback attempt.
