Mapleton Water District Town Hall
Mapleton residents will have an opportunity next month to discuss the future of the community’s water and sewer infrastructure. The Mapleton Water District is holding a town hall October 12th as the district looks at infrastructure needs, funding, and the cost of maintaining and improving its systems. District officials say securing outside funding can help pay for improvements, but some funding can also add to the district’s debt and ultimately affect customer rates. The town hall runs from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Mapleton High School gym. State Representative Boomer Wright, Lane County Commissioner Ryan Ceniga and the Mapleton Water District Board are listed as hosts. A free dinner prepared by Mapleton students will also be provided.
Food Insecurity Impacted by Rise in Costs
Food pantries across Oregon — including services here in Florence — continue to face increased pressure as food costs rise and federal food assistance is reduced. Oregon Food Bank says visits to its network have climbed 51 percent in just two years, reaching a record 2.9 million visits last year. The same pressures are being felt locally at Florence Food Share, where demand for food assistance remains high. Food banks say emergency pantries were designed to supplement programs such as SNAP — not replace them. In Oregon, SNAP provides about seven meals for every one provided through the Oregon Food Bank network.
Search and Rescue Volunteer Opportunity
The Lane County Sheriff’s Office is recruiting volunteers for its Search and Rescue program and says attending an information session is required before applying. Sessions will be held October 8th, 11th, and 20th at 6 p.m. at Harris Hall in Eugene. The sheriff’s office is looking for adults with a positive attitude and a desire to serve the community. Volunteers must be available to respond day or night, often in difficult weather and terrain. Those who complete the Search and Rescue Academy earn certification through the Oregon State Sheriffs’ Association and receive training in medical care, navigation, outdoor survival, and other specialized rescue skills.
