E-Bike Safety
Florence Police are reminding residents about electric bicycle and scooter safety as injuries continue to rise. According to the Oregon Health Authority, e-scooter-related hospital and emergency room visits more than doubled between 2021 and 2024, reaching 418 statewide. The first nine months of 2025 saw another 509 injuries. E-bike riders must be at least 16 and are prohibited from riding on sidewalks. Electric scooter riders must wear helmets regardless of age and are limited to 15 miles per hour. Police encourage riders to follow traffic laws and check local restrictions.
Be Ready
Coastal residents are being reminded to prepare for the possibility that help may not be immediately available following a major earthquake or other disaster. The “4 Weeks Cascadia Ready” recommendation calls for enough food, water, medications and emergency supplies for everyone in the household, including pets. Residents should also know evacuation routes, have a family emergency plan and be ready for an extended power outage.
Coastal Canine Classic
Florence goes to the dogs next weekend with the inaugural Coastal Canine Classic, October 16 through 18. The weekend includes a dog show, costume contest, agility competition, tricks and talents, photo sessions and a vendor fair at the Florence Events Center. Friday kicks things off with movies and a Yappy Hour at City Lights Cinemas, while participating Old Town businesses will also offer dog-friendly stops throughout the weekend. General admission is $15 per person, per day.
