Universal Health Care for Oregon?; Great Pumpkin Giveaway; Property Tax Reports

Universal Health Care for Oregon?

Oregon is moving closer to a proposed universal healthcare system that would eliminate insurance premiums, deductibles, and copayments. A state-appointed board is expected to deliver its proposal to lawmakers by December first, with implementation potentially beginning in 2032. Supporters say the plan would expand coverage while reducing administrative costs, funded through new taxes replacing current insurance expenses. But the Hospital Association of Oregon warns the proposal could add financial burdens and destabilize an already struggling healthcare system. The plan would also require federal approval to redirect Medicare and Medicaid funding. Lawmakers could consider the proposal in 2027, or send it to voters in 2028.

Great Pumpkin Giveaway

Since Coast Radio first went on the air 38 years ago, the station, along with many sponsors, has been bringing the Great Pumpkin Giveaway to the community. The Lemhouse family, which owns and operates Ace Hardware in Florence, has been the presenting sponsor for nearly two decades. The event hands out approximately 400 free pumpkins, along with bags stuffed with candy, to kids 18 and under. This year’s event takes place Thursday in the parking lot of the Florence Saw Shop and Florence Home Furniture. Festivities begin at 3 p.m., with pumpkins being distributed at 4 p.m. sharp. The Florence Lions Club will be cooking hot dogs, and A&W will provide root beer, all free to attendees. Western Lane Fire and EMS, Florence Police, and the Western Lane Crisis Response Team will assist in handing out pumpkins. KCST will also broadcast live from the location.

Property Tax Reports

The Oregon Department of Revenue has released its annual Property Tax Statistics Report, showing property taxes generated more than 10 billion dollars for local governments during the 2025-26 fiscal year. Property taxes remain one of Oregon’s largest sources of public revenue, second only to state personal income taxes. The report examines property values, taxes collected, and trends in Oregon’s property tax system, including changes dating back to 1990. The complete report, including detailed county-by-county statistics, is available on the Oregon Department of Revenue website.
