New Crisis Response Director

Western Lane Fire and EMS Authority has named Cindy Gentry the new director of its Crisis Response Program. Gentry joined the program in 2023 as a part-time responder and became assistant manager in 2024. She will now oversee approximately a dozen staff members providing crisis intervention, case management and follow-up support. The program has experienced an annual call volume increase of about 40 percent, responding to approximately 865 calls during the first nine months of 2026. Chief Rob Chance praised Gentry’s leadership and dedication. Gentry says her priority is ensuring people in crisis receive continued support beyond the initial response.

Rhody Theme and Logo Contest

The Florence Area Chamber of Commerce has announced the theme for the 120th annual Rhododendron Festival, scheduled for May 13th through the 16th, 2027. This year’s theme is “Rhodies, Rides and Coastal Vibes,” and the Chamber is inviting artists and community members to submit designs for the official festival logo. Entries must incorporate a rhododendron flower, a recognizable Florence landmark, and the festival theme. The winning designer will receive 250 dollars and recognition on festival promotional materials. The submission deadline is November 16th. Contest rules and entry information are available through the Florence Area Chamber of Commerce.

Halloween Festivities

Halloween festivities kick off this evening in Florence as C.R.O.W. presents its annual Haunted Maze at the Florence Events Center. This year’s theme, “Scary Tales,” features twisted versions of familiar fairy tales, complete with wicked queens, sinister creatures and frightening surprises. The maze runs through Saturday, with less scary options available for younger visitors and those with sensory sensitivities. Proceeds benefit C.R.O.W.’s nonprofit youth arts programs. Other Halloween activities are planned throughout the community, including the annual Old Town Trick-or-Treat event Saturday afternoon from 3 to 5.

Gas Prices

Gas prices continue to decline across Oregon, although elevated crude oil prices are limiting relief at the pump. According to Triple-A, Oregon’s average price for regular gasoline dropped seven cents this week to four dollars and 86 cents a gallon. The national average slipped one cent to four dollars and 27 cents. Here in Florence, regular gasoline has fallen to four dollars and 83 cents a gallon. Triple-A says ongoing tensions with Iran and disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz are keeping crude oil prices near 100 dollars a barrel, raising concerns that gasoline prices could begin climbing again.
