SNAP Benefits For the Holidays

With the holidays approaching, the Oregon Department of Human Services is encouraging residents who are not currently receiving SNAP food benefits to apply now to determine eligibility. Those who previously lost benefits may also qualify again. The agency says seasonal employment, including holiday retail and other temporary jobs, may help recipients meet federal work requirements of 80 hours per month. However, additional income could also affect eligibility. Officials are reminding recipients to report required changes in income, keep their contact information current and carefully review benefit notices. More information and applications are available through the Oregon Department of Human Services.

Transitioning to University from Community College

Oregon community college students will have an easier path to private colleges and universities under a new statewide transfer initiative. The Oregon Alliance of Independent Colleges and Universities has announced a program involving 11 institutions designed to simplify credit transfers, admission requirements and financial aid information. Eligible students meeting minimum grade point requirements may qualify for streamlined admission consideration. The Alliance says 91 percent of students at participating institutions received financial assistance during the last academic year, averaging nearly 33 thousand dollars. Additional information about the Oregon Transfer Pathway Initiative is available at O-A-I-C-U dot org.

Celebrating the Exploding Whale

Florence will celebrate the 56th anniversary of the infamous exploding whale incident with a weekend of activities November 14th and 15th. Saturday features a screening of the award-winning documentary Oh Whale at City Lights Cinemas, with special guest Paul Linnman, whose 1970 news report made the event famous. Sunday’s free celebration moves to Bridgeport Market at 75 Harbor Street in Old Town, from noon until 4, featuring live music, marine-inspired art and a commemorative toast at 3:45. Linnman will also be on hand Sunday, and the Siuslaw Pioneer Museum will feature its exploding whale exhibit.
