RENTON, Wash. (AP) – The Seattle Seahawks claimed kicker Steven
Hauschka off waivers from Denver yesterday after also picked up
offensive tackle Jarriel King from the New York Giants and
defensive tackles Landon Cohen and Al Woods from New England and
Tampa Bay. To make room on the roster, Seattle released kicker Jeff
Reed, defensive tackles Junior Siavii and Lazarius “Pep”
Levingston and linebacker David Vobora.
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) – David DeJesus and Ryan Sweeney each drove
in two runs, Hideki Matsui doubled three times and the Oakland
Athletics completed a three-game sweep of the Seattle Mariners with
an 8-5 victory yesterday. Kurt Suzuki, Brandon Allen and Josh
Willingham also drove in runs for the A’s, who won their third
straight following a five-game losing streak. Dustin Ackley hit a
two-run homer and Ichiro Suzuki drove in a run for the Mariners,
who have dropped four straight games.
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) – Outfielder Casper Wells left the Seattle
Mariners’ game against the Oakland Athletics after getting hit by a
pitch on his left wrist during the second inning. Wells was plunked
by Trevor Cahill yesterday and immediately fell to the ground as
the ball dribbled away. After being examined by team doctors, Wells
remained in the game to run but was replaced in the field by Rayvon
Robinson the next inning.
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) – Michael Ford ran for two touchdowns and
Jarrett Lee admirably directed LSU’s offense in place of suspended
quarterback Jordan Jefferson in the fourth-ranked Tigers’
season-opening 40-27 victory over No. 3 Oregon on Saturday night.
Missing cornerback-punt returner Cliff Harris was too much for
Oregon to overcome in a rare season-opening matchup of top-five
teams on a neutral field.
