Here is the latest Washington, Oregon and Alaska sports news from
The Associated Press
SEATTLE (AP) – Matt Ryan threw for 291 yards, rookie Julio Jones
caught 11 passes for 127 yards, and the Atlanta Falcons held off a
second-half rally from Seattle for a 30-28 win over the Seahawks
yesterday. Ryan started out 13-for-15 and had a 1-yard touchdown
pass to Tony Gonzalez on Atlanta’s first possession. Tarvaris
Jackson threw for three TDs, but Seattle couldn’t complete the
comeback, and Steven Hauschka missed a 61-yard field goal attempt
with 13 seconds left.
SEATTLE (AP) – Atlanta starting center Todd McClure and Seattle
wide receiver Mike Williams both left Sunday’s game with injuries
and neither returned. The team says McClure had a knee injury,
while Williams had a concussion. Seattle’s most serious injury was
sustained by linebacker Matt McCoy. During punt coverage in the
first quarter, the outside of McCoy’s right leg was crashed into by
teammate Aaron Curry, with McCoy’s right knee bending inward badly.
He was helped off the field on a cart. The team didn’t go into
specifics about McCoy’s injury.
SEATTLE (AP) – Atlanta wide receiver Roddy White was active for
the Falcons’ game at Seattle, while the Seahawks were without
starting strong safety Kam Chancellor. White was questionable on
the final injury report with a thigh injury. Even with White active
the Falcons were to be down two starters Sunday that were
previously ruled as out: defensive tackle Jonathan Babineaux (knee)
and linebacker Stephen Nicholas (calf).
VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) – Kenny Cooper scored in the
25th minute and the Portland Timbers beat the Vancouver Whitecaps
1-0 in the first MLS game played at the newly refurbished BC Place
Stadium. The Timbers took advantage of a Whitecaps mistake to score
the only goal they would need as defender Alain Rochat turned the
ball over at midfield. Midfielder Diego Chara fed Cooper a perfect
ball and the big forward hammered a shot from the top of the box
over the outstretched fingers of Vancouver goalkeeper Joe Cannon.
