LEBANON, Ore. (AP) – Someone’s coming through the roof to gain
access to Willamette Valley businesses – and it’s not Santa on a
late trip. KEZI says three separate business break-ins in Lebanon,
and one in Albany, have all involved a burglar breaking in through
the roof. Linn Lanes Bowling Center was hit Dec. 30. Two Lebanon
restaurants were hit Dec. 15 and Oct. 30; an Albany restaurant was
hit in late September. Police have no suspects.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A crew of firefighters, short on time with
a man pinned under a car, lifted the vehicle off the bicyclist by
hand just before rush hour early yesterday. The rescue, which took
about two minutes, came after witnesses called 911 to report the
pinned cyclist in east Portland. The Oregonian says 30-year-old
Samuel Guthrie was struck by a car and then rolled over by another
car, which pinned him face down in a busy intersection.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Are state and federal wildlife biologists
too far apart when it comes to saying whether a cow was killed by a
wolf? A report to be presented today to the Oregon Fish and
Wildlife Commission accuses federal investigators of reaching
confusing conclusions – ones that side with cattlemen and against
wolves – when determining the cause of slain livestock. At stake is
reimbursement to cattlemen from a state fund.

LA CENTER, Wash. (AP) – A 14-year-old southwest Washington
middle school student remains hospitalized in critical condition in
Portland, Ore., after collapsing at basketball practice. The La
Center School District superintendent says Cody Sherrell is
“hanging in there.” Coaches, administrators and parents who
rushed to help the boy when he collapsed in cardiac arrest shared
their stories yesterday. Coaches and parents performed CPR.
MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) – The U.S. Marshals’ Office says officers
trying to arrest a 20-year-old man on a probation violation warrant
in Medford fatally shot the man when he used tried to use his
vehicle as a weapon. Supervisory Deputy Eric Wahlstrom said the
deputies opened fire last night in a grocery store parking lot. The
young man died at the scene. He was not immediately identified. The
fugitive was on probation after serving time for assaulting a
deputy marshal in October 2009 in Medford.
CORBETT, Ore. (AP) – Thieves who broke into an Oregon man’s
shed, taking safes filled with jewels, silver bricks and valuable
coins, quickly started making mistakes. Multnomah County sheriff’s
officers believe the trio made off with loot worth more than
$50,000. Now some of that loot is being recovered. The Oregonian
reports the thieves thought much of the jewelry was fake – and
tossed it. Other items were pawned. They traded silver and gold
coins for bills at a bank after a coin-counting machine rejected
them. Now the coins are back with the owner.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Gerald Wallace had 31 points and sparked a
key third-quarter run to lead the Portland Trail Blazers to a
fast-paced 107-96 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers. LaMarcus
Aldridge added 28 points and 10 rebounds for Portland, which led by
as many as 14 points. The Blazers had just four turnovers.
SALEM, Ore. (AP) – The Oregon Department of Education plans to
submit a proposal later this month seeking a waiver to the No Child
Left Behind law. The governor’s education adviser says the federal
law takes a punitive, one-size-fits-all approach to math and
reading standards. The Statesman Journal reports Oregon’s proposal
would switch from a system based on standardized tests to one that
calls for evaluating schools based on how well they help individual
students improve from one year to the next.
SANDY, Ore. (AP) – The cause of a fire at a home in Sandy has
not officially been determined, but the fire department says it
involved a very dry Christmas tree. The fire was confined to the
living room of the home and caused significant burns to a man who
lives there. He’s been taken to Legacy Emmanuel Medical Center.
SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Police say a man accidentally fired a shot
from his AK-47 rifle inside his home last night in Salem. The
bullet went through several walls and into his neighbor’s house,
narrowly missing two adults and a child inside. The 26-year-old gun
owner was arrested and jailed on charges of reckless endangering.

ah-GWOO’-mih-kay) had 32 points and 15 boards to lead No. 4
Stanford to a 93-70 win over Oregon. Bonnie Samuelson tied her
