MOSCOW, Idaho (AP) – Kyle Barone had 17 points and 12 rebounds
to lead Idaho to a 70-69 victory against Seattle on night. Barone
tied the game at 67-all with a pair of free throws, and Deremy
Geiger put the Vandals up for good, 70-69, with a 3-pointer with
1:22 remaining. The Redhawks had the last shot, but Aaron
Broussard, who scored 20 points, sent a shot off the rim as the
buzzer sounded. Stephen Madison and Geiger had 16 points apiece for
Idaho. Sterling Carter had 12 points for Seattle.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The NBA says a goaltending call in the
final seconds of regulation in the Portland Trail Blazers’ overtime
loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder on Monday night was incorrect.
Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge was called for goaltending on
Kevin Durant’s attempted layup with six seconds left in the game.
The call tied the game, which then went into overtime. The Thunder
went on to win 111-107. Fans at the Rose Garden booed the officials
as they left the court.
PULLMAN, Wash. (AP) – Washington State starting linebacker C.J.
Mizell has been kicked off the team after he was arrested this
weekend in connection with a fight at a fraternity house. Coach
Mike Leach said yesterday Mizell was no longer on the team because
of a violation of team policy. Pullman police say Mizell was
arrested Sunday on misdemeanor charges of assault and trespassing.
Police say he tried to enter a fraternity party Saturday night, and
punched a member when he was denied entry.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Newly acquired Portland Timbers forward
Jose Adolfo Valencia will be sidelined for 6-to-12 months following
knee surgery. Valencia, son of former Colombia national team star
Adolfo Valencia, had damaged cartilage in his left knee repaired
Monday by team director of medicine Dr. Jonathan E. Greenleaf. The
Timbers say it’s uncertain when Valencia was hurt and said they
amended the original terms of the loan deal reached in December
with Colombia’s Independiente Santa Fe.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Geoff Hollister, who ran track for the
Oregon Ducks and went on to become one of Nike’s first executives,
has died after a long battle with cancer. He was 66. A number of
athletes at last weekend’s New Balance Indoor Grand Prix in Boston
wore patches in support of Hollister, who died on Monday. Hollister
opened a Blue Ribbon Sports store in Eugene, Ore., in 1968. The
fledgling company founded by Oregon track coach Bill Bowerman and
alum Phil Knight later became Nike.
