SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) – Gary Bell Jr. and Kevin Pangos combined
for 10 3-pointers and 32 points as Gonzaga closed the regular
season by steamrolling undermanned Longwood 92-60 last night. Bell
had career bests of six 3-pointers and 20 points, and Pangos had 12
points on four 3s for the Bulldogs. Freshman Ryan Spangler had his
first double-double with career highs of 12 points and 10 boards.
Longwood, which had only had seven players, was led by Antwan
Carter’s 18 points and Tristan Carey’s 16.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The Portland Trail Blazers are welcoming
back free agent center Joel Przybilla (priz-BILL’-a). Przybilla,
who spent more than six seasons in Portland before he was traded to
Charlotte last season, has not played this season. The 7-foot-1
center was pursued by Chicago, Miami and Milwaukee but decided to
rejoin the Blazers last week, pending a physical exam. Over an
11-year NBA career, the 32-year-old Przybilla has averaged 6.3
rebounds, 1.5 blocks and four points per game.
ATLANTA (AP) – Free agent linebacker Leroy Hill has been
arrested by Atlanta police for possession of less than an ounce of
marijuana. An Atlanta police statement yesterday says Hill was
arrested Saturday after officers were called to a condominium after
a complaint about a marijuana odor. The News Tribune of Tacoma,
Wash., first reported Hill’s arrest. Hill has spent his entire NFL
career with the Seattle Seahawks. He was previously arrested on a
domestic violence charge in a Seattle suburb in 2010.
PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) – Pro scout and one-time Seattle Mariners
director of player development Frank Mattox has died at age 49. The
Mariners announced his death yesterday, saying Mattox passed away
at his home in Peoria, Ariz., on Sunday night. Mattox had spent 18
seasons in the Mariners organization. He was promoted to scouting
director in 1998 and was named director of player development in
2004. In 2008, Mattox asked to go back to scouting and had worked
as a major league scout ever since.
