PITTSBURGH (AP) – Robert Sacre and Gary Bell Jr. scored 14
points apiece as Gonzaga routed West Virginia 77-54 on last night
in the second round of the NCAA tournament. Kevin Pangos added 13
points and five assists for the seventh-seeded Bulldogs, who
tomorrow in the third round will play Ohio State – 78-59 winners
over Loyola (Md.) in Pittsburgh last night.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Peyton Siva scored 17 points and
Louisville finally moved on in the NCAA tournament, beating
Davidson 69-62 yesterday. After getting ousted in their first
tournament game the past two seasons, coach Rick Pitino and the
fourth-seeded Cardinals advanced at last in the West Regional in
Portland. Jake Cohen had 24 points and 10 boards for Davidson.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Kendall Williams scored 14 points in the
second half and bottled up Long Beach State star Casper Ware
defensively to help fifth-seeded New Mexico hold on for a 75-68
victory in the West Regional yesterday. Drew Gordon added 18 points
and 13 rebounds for the Lobos. T.J. Robinson added 12 points and 14
rebounds for 12th-seeded Long Beach State.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Bradford Burgess hit a key 3-pointer with
1:33 left and Shaka Smart coached VCU to another tournament
surprise, holding off Wichita State 62-59 in the South Regional
yesterday in Portland. The 12th-seeded Rams led by as many as 13 in
the second half, but the Shockers closed to 54-53 on Garrett
Stutz’s layup with 5:39 left.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Jordan Hulls went on a second-half
shooting spree and finished with 22 points, and fourth-seeded
Indiana rolled to an impressive 79-66 win over New Mexico State in
the second round of the South Regional last night. The Hoosiers
picked up their first tournament win since beating Gonzaga in 2007.
Indiana will face No. 12 seed VCU on Saturday.
PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) – Barry Zito allowed two runs and four hits
in four innings, helping the San Francisco Giants top the Seattle
Mariners 7-5 yesterday. Brandon Crawford hit a go-ahead two-run
home run in the sixth inning and provided solid defense at
shortstop. Crawford’s homer gave the Giants a 4-2 lead, and San
Francisco scored three runs in the seventh inning.
