Local Sports – Siuslaw and Sutherlin Split on the diamond; Beavers take non-conference Civil War

Prep Baseball

The Siuslaw Vikings took sole possession of second place in the Far West League baseball race yesterday with a rain soaked 14-9 win over the Sutherlin Bulldogs at home.  Jake Thompson earned the win in relief, going three innings and giving up one hit while striking out five.  Thompson was very good at the plate as well, going two-for four with two doubles, two sacrifices and six RBI.

Josh Iabichello broke a hitting slump with an RBI double in the fifth inning to give the Vikings the lead for good.  Ryan Smith was four-for-four at the plate and threw the first four innings.  In other Far West games yesterday, South Umpqua beat Brookings-Harbor 9-5 to remain on top of the standings, Douglas downed North Bend 10-3.

Softball

Things were knotted at nothing-nothing in Sutherlin after the regulation seven innings between the Vikings and the Bulldogs.  With two out in the bottom of the ninth, a past ball at the plate allowed a Sutherlin runner to cross and break the tie for the one-nothing win.  In other Far West results, South Umpqua beat Brookings-Harbor 10-6, Douglas shut out North Bend 14-nothing to remain undefeated at the top of the standings, Sutherlin and Siuslaw are tied three games back in second place.

Civil War Baseball

Oregon State took the first round of the baseball civil-war matchup yesterday with a non-league 7-1 win at PK Park in Eugene.  Oregon, ranked #10, has now lost three straight, matching the Ducks longest losing streak of the year.  The Beavers have won three straight.
