SEATTLE (AP) – Rookie slugger Jesus Montero lined a two-run double in the first inning to get Seattle on the board, Mike Carp added his first homer of the season and the Mariners cruised to a 5-2 win over the Minnesota Twins yesterday. Seattle starter Hector Noesi took a shutout into the seventh inning before giving up a solo home run to Ryan Doumit. Despite the homer, Noesi allowed four hits and struck out five. Seattle won its second in a row after snapping a seven-game losing streak Saturday.

SEATTLE (AP) – The slumping Minnesota Twins are calling up prized infield prospect Brian Dozier and left-hander Scott Diamond from the minors. The team announced yesterday from Seattle that the roster moves will be made today. Dozier will take the spot of slugger Justin Morneau, who will placed on the disabled list with a sore right wrist. Minnesota will make a corresponding move today to clear room for Diamond. Dozier is expected to be the Twins’ full-time shortstop. Diamond is 4-1 with a 2.60 ERA.

PITTSBURGH (AP) – The Pittsburgh Steelers have signed fourth-round draft pick Alameda Ta’amu and fifth-round pick Chris Rainey. Pittsburgh traded up in the fourth round to select Ta’amu with the 109th pick. The 6-foot-2, 348-pound nose tackle out of Washington is expected to back up veteran Casey Hampton this season. Ta’amu recorded 109 tackles with 7½ sacks and 16½ tackles for loss during his last two seasons with the Huskies. He was an All-Pac 12 honorable mention as a junior and a senior.

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – Brianne Theisen set the Pac-12 record in the heptathlon with 6,353 points yesterday. The Oregon senior’s mark is the best in the world this year, and it surpassed the Olympic “A” qualifying standard of 6,150 points. Theisen hopes to compete for her native Canada in the London Games. It’s Theisen’s third conference heptathlon title. Oregon swept Pac-12 multiple-event championships at Hayward Field. Freshman Dakotah Keys won the decathlon title with 7,793 points.
