DENVER (AP) – Jesus Montero and Justin Smoak hit back-to-back home runs, Blake Beavan tied a season-high with seven strikeouts and the Seattle Mariners held on to beat the Colorado Rockies 6-4 yesterday to complete a three-game sweep. Mike Carp also homered and Dustin Ackley had two hits for the Mariners. Carlos Gonzalez homered among his three hits and Dexter Fowler also homered for Colorado, which has lost four straight overall and 8 of 10 at home in May.

UNDATED (AP) – Eric Brunner’s goal in the 19th minute broke a three-match scoring drought and the Portland Timbers went on to defeat the Chicago Fire 2-1 yesterday. An own-goal in the 52nd minute proved to be the winner for the Timbers, who had played to scoreless draws in their last two matches. Jalil Anibaba scored the lone goal for the Fire, stopping a three-game unbeaten streak. The loss also snapped a two-game winning streak on the road for Chicago.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) – Fredy Montero scored in the 90th minute to give the Seattle Sounders a 2-2 tie with the Vancouver Whitecaps on Saturday. Eddie Johnson also scored for Seattle. Alain Rochat and Camilo scored for Vancouver in front of a sellout crowd of 21,000 at B.C. Place Stadium. Montero took Johnson’s header on the run, lifted the ball around Vancouver captain Jay DeMerit, put it on the ground and fired home a shot from the top of the 18-yard box.

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – Kaylan Howard hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning and Oregon went on to defeat BYU 4-1 in the NCAA softball Eugene Regional final on Saturday. The 11th-seeded Ducks advance to face the winner of the Austin Regional. Oregon won three in a row in the first regional held in Eugene. Samantha Pappas added a two-run double in the four-run fifth for the Ducks. Jessica Moore allowed just one run on six hits with seven strikeouts. The Ducks advance to the Super Regional round for the third consecutive season.
