Mariners starter Jason Vargas gave up four runs and nine hits in 5 2-3 innings. He struck out a season-best eight. Kyle Seager homered and Seattle had 10 hits overall. But the Mariners had to survive a late rally by the Angels, who scored twice in the sixth and had two more runs in the eighth.

SEATTLE (AP) – The Seattle Mariners have selected Florida catcher Mike Zunino with the No. 3 pick in the Major League Baseball amateur draft. Zunino was taken yesterday. The 21-year-old junior from Coral Cables, Fla., was considered the top collegiate position player available. Seattle selected in the top three spots of the amateur draft for the third time in four years.

MILWAUKEE (AP) – The Milwaukee Brewers have selected catcher Clint Coulter and outfielder Victor Roache in the first round of Major League Baseball’s first-year player draft. The Brewers took Coulter out of Union High School in Camas, Wash. with the No. 27 overall pick, which the Brewers obtained from Detroit after Prince Fielder signing with the Tigers as a free agent.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The Portland Trail Blazers have hired former Los Angeles Clippers GM Neil Olshey as the team’s new general manager. The announcement by the Blazers yesterday came less than an hour after the Clippers announced that they had decided to part ways with Olshey. The Blazers have been operating under interim GM Chad Buchanan for the past year. He took over when the Blazers fired Rich Cho after about 10 months. Olshey becomes the 10th GM in Trail Blazers history.

CRESWELL, Ore. (AP) – Casey Martin and his cart are headed back to The Olympic Club for the U.S. Open. Martin, who sued for the right to use a golf cart because of a degenerative disease in his right leg, holed a 5-foot par putt on the final hole at Emerald Valley Golf Club to be the medalist at a sectional qualifier and earn one of two spots to the U.S. Open. Martin has not played the U.S. Open since 1998, when he forced the USGA to let him ride a cart because of his leg.
