SEATTLE (AP) – Clayton Richards pitched seven strong innings, Everth Cabrera had an RBI triple in a four-run sixth and the San Diego Padres hung on for a 5-4 win over the Seattle Mariners last night. Seattle starter Felix Hernandez foundered in his first outing in 11 days. The 2010 Cy Young Award winner pitched six innings, allowing nine hits, five runs and three walks. Seattle made a late push by scoring three runs in the ninth, including a home run from Michael Saunders.

RENTON, Wash. (AP) – Whatever focus there was on the Seattle Seahawks quarterback competition is taking a backseat during this week’s minicamp due to the absence of starting defensive end Chris Clemons. Coach Pete Carroll said yesterday that Clemons is holding out from the mandatory team minicamp over what Carroll characterized as concerns about Clemons’ future. Clemons has reason to worry about his future. Seattle drafted defensive end Bruce Irvin with the 15th overall pick in April.

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) – After seeing the Seattle Seahawks get punished last week, Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy knows teams can get in trouble for violating a league-wide ban on live contact during offseason workouts. McCarthy acknowledged yesterday that he still isn’t sure what level of contact can trigger a violation. Last week, the NFL punished the Seahawks after the league’s management council and the players’ union determined that Seattle violated the collective bargaining agreement’s offseason workout rules by having live contact during one of the club’s organized team activity sessions.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Linebacker Brian Banks is getting a tryout with the Kansas City Chiefs before joining the Seattle Seahawks for their upcoming minicamp. The 26-year-old Banks was a one-time high school star at Long Beach Poly who was recently exonerated in a California rape case in which he was falsely accused. Banks served more than five years in prison before his conviction was overturned. Banks has been most closely linked to Seattle, where he’s been invited back for minicamp today.
