SEATTLE (AP) – Justin Smoak’s one-out single in the bottom of the ninth scored pinch-runner Munenori Kawasaki from second when the throw home hit Kawasaki in the back, giving the Mariners a 2-1 win over the San Francisco Giants yesterday. Sergio Romo allowed back-to-back singles to Kyle Seager and Jesus Montero to open the ninth before being replaced. After Michael Saunders failed to bunt the runners over, Smoak lined a single to left. Tom Wilhelmsen pitched a scoreless ninth.
SEATTLE (AP) – Sue Bird scored 21 points and Tanisha Wright added 12 points and eight assists as the Seattle Storm beat Minnesota 65-62 last night, handed the defending champion Lynx their first loss of the season. Tina Thompson added 10 points for the Storm, including two game-clinching free throws with 1 second remaining. Thompson also grabbed two key rebounds in the final 5 seconds, including an offensive board with 1.9 to go after Bird missed two free throws.
CARSON, Calif. (AP) – Todd Dunivant scored the lone goal to help the Los Angeles Galaxy snap a seven-game winless streak with a 1-0 victory over the Portland Timbers last night. David Beckham’s corner kick found Dunivant on the far post in the 61st minute. The Galaxy defender eluded his marker and beat Portland goalkeeper Troy Perkins for the game’s only goal. Galaxy goalkeeper Josh Saunders made four saves to give Los Angeles its first shutout of the season.
FEDERAL WAY, Wash. (AP) – Abby Johnston and Kelci Bryant own a slight lead over Kassidy Cook and Christina Loukas going into the 3-meter synchronized final at the U.S. Olympic diving trials in Federal Way, Wash. Johnston and Bryant totaled 637.80 points through the preliminaries and semifinals yesterday on opening night of the eight-day trials at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center, south of Seattle. Cook and Loukas finished at 631.29. Six other advancing teams were well behind.
