ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) – Blake Beavan scattered four hits over eight innings and the Seattle Mariners beat the Tampa Bay Rays 2-1 yesterday. Jesus Montero and Brendan Ryan each had an RBI double for the Mariners, who took two of three from the Rays to finish a 5-2 road trip. Beavan struck out five and walked none, outpitching Matt Moore in a tight duel.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) – Barry Robson scored on a penalty kick in the 63rd minute to give the Vancouver Whitecaps a 2-1 victory over the San Jose Earthquakes yesterday. Dane Richards also scored for the Whitecaps. Vancouver, 1-3-3 in its previous seven matches, broke a tie with Seattle for sole possession of third place in the Western Conference. Alan Gordon scored for the West-leading Earthquakes.

BEND, Ore. (AP) – Reigning Olympic time trial champion Kristin Armstrong withdrew from the last two days of racing at the Cascade Cycling Classic in central Oregon to prepare for the London Olympics. The Bulletin reports that Armstrong skipped Saturday’s Downtown Twilight Criterium despite leading the five-stage race by more than two minutes after the completion of the first three stages. The race concluded yesterday.

STATELINE, Nev. (AP) – Dan Quinn birdied three of his first seven holes yesterday to pull ahead and then stretched his lead on the back nine to earn a six-point victory over former NFL quarterback and Washington State University star Mark Rypien (RIHP’-ihn) in the American Century Championship at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course. Quinn finished with 66 points in the modified Stableford scoring system to win the event for the fourth time. Rypien was second with 60.
