Here is the latest Washington, Oregon and Alaska sports news from The Associated Press
SEATTLE (AP) – John Jaso hit the go-ahead single in the sixth inning and Blake Beavan’s 7 2-3 strong innings led the Mariners to their seventh consecutive victory, 5-3 over the Toronto Blue Jays last night. The winning streak is Seattle’s longest since an eight-game run June 23-July 1, 2011. Beavan gave up three runs and seven hits. He threw 82 pitches and struck out four.
SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) – New Washington State football coach Mike Leach wants to take his team back to junior high as fall camp opens today. Leach says he plans to emphasize blocking and tackling in the first week of practice as the Cougars seek to improve on a 4-8 season that ended with coach Paul Wulff being fired. Leach says blocking and tackling are the same things that a good junior high would have emphasized.
CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) – It will take more than a couple of losing seasons to shake the smile from Mike Riley’s face. Oregon State’s relentlessly optimistic head coach insists he is bullish on the Beavers in 2012. The Beavers’ 2011 season could have hardly been worse, with an 0-4 start, and a 3-9 overall record. Fall camp begins Monday, and Riley has plans to institute some structural changes that he hopes will make a difference.
LONDON (AP) – Nathan Adrian of Bremerton, Wash., won the men’s 100-meter freestyle by the smallest of margins at the London Olympics yesterday. Adrian clocked 47.52 seconds to win by 0.01 ahead of world champion James “The Missile” Magnussen of Australia. Magnussen touched in 47.53 to take the silver medal and Brent Hayden of Canada finished in 47.80 for bronze.
