BALTIMORE (AP) — Chris Tillman took a three-hit shutout into the eighth inning to extend a run of successful starts by Baltimore pitchers, and the Orioles beat Jason Vargas and the Seattle Mariners 3-1 last night. Nick Markakis homered and Mark Reynolds had three hits and an RBI for the Orioles, who have won six of eight to improve to 58-51.

RENTON, Wash. (AP) — Terrell Owens is coming back to the NFL after one year on the sidelines. Owens had a tryout with the Seattle Seahawks yesterday, and hours later the team announced it had agreed to terms with the 38-year-old receiver. He hasn’t played in the NFL since 2010, when he caught 72 passes for 983 yards and nine touchdowns with Cincinnati.

SEATTLE (AP) — Steve Sarkisian’s fourth year is beginning at Washington after an offseason where the Huskies underwent a complete makeover of the defensive coaching staff. The Huskies started fall camp yesterday and while there are plenty of questions about what Washington will look like on defense, the most important offensive position is settled with the return of quarterback Keith Price.

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — The Oregon Ducks opened camp yesterday and the lingering quarterback questions took center stage. Freshman Marcus Mariota and sophomore Bryan Bennett have 22 practices over the next three weeks to win the starting job for the Ducks’ season opener against Arkansas State on Sept. 1. One will replace Darron Thomas, who was 23-3 as a starter.

CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) — Bud Riley, the father of Oregon State football coach Mike Riley and a former assistant coach at the school, has died. He was 86. The school announced Bud Riley died Saturday after a lengthy illness. He had been living in British Columbia, Canada. Riley was an assistant coach at Oregon State from 1965-72 and returned to the school in 1979.
