Here is the latest Washington, Oregon and Alaska sports news from The Associated Press

SEATTLE (AP) – A new arena in Seattle that could bring the NBA back to the Puget Sound appears a step closer to reality. Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn has issued a statement late last night saying he welcomes the news that the Seattle City Council has decided to support bringing basketball back to Seattle. The statement came after KING-TV and The Seattle Times reported that the City Council and arena investor Chris Hansen had agreed upon changes to the original memorandum of understanding that would address transportation concerns in the area around the proposed arena. A formal announcement is expected today.

RENTON, Wash. (AP) – Of the 70 offensive plays the Seattle Seahawks ran against Arizona, more than half came in the Cardinals’ half of the field. And that makes the Seahawks’ 20-16 loss even more difficult for Carroll to accept. Seattle had plenty of chances, starting all the way back in the first quarter and ending when Russell Wilson’s pass for Braylon Edwards at the goal line fell incomplete on fourth-down with 18 seconds remaining. Carroll said yesterday he was disappointed in the way the Seahawks offensive line protected its rookie QB. He said Arizona continually brought pressure on Wilson, but his linemen needed to be better.

NEW YORK (AP) – The replacement officials’ error that awarded an extra timeout to Seattle in the final minute of its loss at Arizona was the third such mistake in an NFL game in the last nine years. On Sunday, Seahawks coach Pete Carroll called timeout with 30 seconds left, but officials had announced two plays earlier Seattle used its last one when receiver Doug Baldwin was injured. After huddling, the officials determined the previous stoppage had been on an incomplete pass, so the Seahawks were not charged with a timeout. Teams must use a timeout for an injured player in the final two minutes, clock running or not.

SEATTLE (AP) – Two days after Washington’s 41-3 whitewashing at third-ranked LSU, head coach Steve Sarkisian’s stomach still hadn’t settled. Sarkisian said yesterday it almost “makes you want to puke,” because he knows the Huskies are better than what they showed. It was a sickly performance by the Huskies on Saturday in Baton Rouge, as most statistics indicate. None was more telling than this: Washington had 48 more penalty yards (74) than rushing yards (26).
