SEATTLE (AP) – Adam Jones hit a two-run homer in the top of the 11th inning and the Baltimore Orioles won their 15th extra-innings game in a row with a 3-1 victory over the Seattle Mariners last night. A night after the teams played an 18-inning marathon that lasted nearly 6 hours, Jones gave Baltimore a huge boost in its race with the Yankees for the lead in the AL East.
HILLSBORO, Ore. (AP) – A ceremonial groundbreaking for the new Hillsboro baseball stadium is set for tomorrow. The 4,500-seat stadium will be home to the minor league affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks that is moving from Yakima, Wash. The $15.2 million stadium should be ready by next season. The event marks the return of professional baseball to the Portland area.
SAN PEDRO SULA, Honduras (AP) – Sammy Ochoa, Eddie Johnson and Brad Evans scored and the Seattle Sounders beat Honduran club Marathon 3-2 yesterday and gained a spot in the quarterfinals of the CONCACAF Champions League. The winning goal came when Evans headed in a corner kick from Mario Roberto Martinez in the 77th minute for Seattle. Seattle finished with nine points in Group Four.
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) – Chris Wondolowski scored two goals in the second half, including the tying goal in stoppage time, to lift the San Jose Earthquakes to a 2-2 draw with the Portland Timbers last night. Wondolowski, who entered the game in the 58th minute, scored his 20th and 21st goals – extending his franchise single-season record, career-high and league-leading total.
IRVING, Texas (AP) – Dallas Cowboys linebacker Sean Lee is ready to move on from the flattening block he took from Seattle receiver Golden Tate, who has apparently been fined by the NFL. In a radio interview with KJR-AM in Seattle yesterday, Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said Tate has been fined and intends to appeal. The Seahawks were off yesterday. Up next is a Monday night home game against Green Bay.
