Sam Johnson caught two touchdown passes and rushed for a third and the Siuslaw Vikings cruised to a 48-18 Far West Football victory over the South Umpqua Lancers Friday night in Myrtle Creek.  Jake Thompson carried the ball 13 times for 72 yards and two touchdowns in the league opener and the Vikings improved to 4-and-oh overall.  In other Far West contests, North Bend beat Douglas 47-20; Brookings-Harbor downed Sutherlin 41-23.

Mapleton fell to the Eagles in Yoncalla 72-12.  The Sailors are 1-3 overall, oh-and-three in the Mountain West League.

41 middle and high school teams converged on Honeyman State Park Saturday for the Woahink Invitational Cross Country meet.  In the varsity boys race Matthew Campbell, Mitchell Butler, and Mack Marbas finished one-two-three; Hayden Schaffner and Seth Campbell were sixth and seventh, as Siuslaw dominated with a near-perfect 19-points for the team title.  Reynolds and Oregon City were a distant second and third.  In the girls’ race, Katy Potter broke 19-minutes for the first time this season to win in 18:59.30.  Katy Wells was 10th and the Siuslaw girls finished in a tie for third with Oregon City.  Reynolds was first, Ashland was second.

Sean Mannion threw for a career-high 433 yards and hit Connor Hamlett on a 9-yard pass with 1:09 left for his third touchdown, lifting No. 18 Oregon State to wild 38-35 win over Arizona Saturday night.

De’Anthony Thomas and Kenjon Barner sandwiched touchdown runs around Avery Patterson’s 34-yard interception return for a score, and No. 2 Oregon used a third-quarter scoring blitz to shake Washington State for a 51-26 win on Saturday night.
