Here is the latest Washington, Oregon and Alaska sports news from The Associated Press
SEATTLE (AP) – Casper Wells tied a career-high with five RBIs including a three-run homer in Seattle’s six-run seventh inning, and the Mariners closed out the 2012 season with a 12-0 rout of the Los Angeles Angels yesterday. Angels’ star rookie Mike Trout went 2-for-3 at the plate with a double leading off the sixth and a single in the eighth to finish the season with a .326 average. That was good for second in the AL batting race, but pretty much locked up the Triple Crown for Detroit’s Miguel Cabrera.
RENTON, Wash. (AP) – The question asked of Seattle coach Pete Carroll had nothing to do with Bobby Wagner. After the way Wagner has played in the first quarter of the season, Carroll made it a point to recognize how well his rookie middle linebacker is doing making the adjustment from college to the NFL. Through four games, Wagner is the Seahawks’ third-leading tackler behind K.J. Wright and Kam Chancellor. He’s the first rookie to start at middle linebacker for Seattle since Lofa Tatupu in 2005.
MARYSVILLE, Wash. (AP) – High school sports referee Jeff Sadorus of Marysville has a couple of football games to officiate this weekend in Seattle. But a couple of weeks ago he was on TV as one of the 128 NFL replacement refs. The 48-year-old told The Daily Herald the replacements allowed the NFL season to start on time, and that they did the best they could in the situation. Sadorus made a controversial call in the Baltimore-New England game, one of six regular- or pre-season games he worked.
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – With their speedy offense and tireless defense, the ultimate goal for the second-ranked Oregon Ducks is finding balance. They’ve recently shown that both sides of the ball are equally capable. When Washington State mounted a first-half challenge last weekend in Seattle, Oregon’s defense stopped the Cougars from taking the lead before the break, making way for the Ducks’ offense in the second half. The Ducks led by a narrow 23-19 margin at the break then pulled away to score 28 straight, including a touchdown by the defense. Against Arizona in the conference opener, Oregon led 13-0 at the half then won 49-0. In addition to holding the Wildcats scoreless, the defense pitched in with two touchdowns.
