ONTARIO, Calif. (AP) – Damian Lillard had 14 points and seven assists in his first NBA action, and the Portland Trail Blazers capitalized on the absences of Kobe Bryant and Dwight Howard for a 93-75 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers in a preseason game last night. LaMarcus Aldridge added 14 points and eight rebounds for the Blazers in their preseason opener under new coach Terry Stotts. Steve Nash scored 13 points and Metta World Peace added 12 as the Lakers lost their second straight.
ONTARIO, Calif. (AP) – Kobe Bryant sat out the Los Angeles Lakers’ preseason game against Portland last night with a strained right shoulder. Bryant apparently injured his shoulder during practice Tuesday. The injury isn’t thought to be serious, and Bryant wanted to play against the Trail Blazers. Bryant missed a day of practice last week with soreness in his right foot. The fifth-leading scorer in NBA history is beginning his 17th season in the league. The Lakers faced Portland without center Dwight Howard.
RENTON, Wash. (AP) – Pete Carroll doesn’t look back on his time as the head coach in New England with any animosity, because the way that experience changed him eventually led to his success at USC and another chance in the NFL with Seattle. Carroll revisits some of his NFL past this week when the Seahawks host the Patriots on Sunday in a matchup between Seattle’s No. 1 ranked defense and New England’s top-rated offense. Carroll coached the Patriots three seasons before being fired in 1999.
