SEATTLE (AP) – Brad Evans scored twice, including the go-ahead goal, to lead the Seattle Sounders to a 3-1 victory over FC Dallas last night. The Sounders, who already have clinched their fourth straight MLS playoff berth, climbed into a second-place tie with Real Salt Lake in the Western Conference. Both teams have one game remaining. The loss eliminated FC Dallas from playoff contention, securing the fifth and final spot in the West for Vancouver.
VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) – Jack Jewsbury scored in the 39th minute and the Portland Timbers beat Vancouver 1-0 yesterday, winning the Cascadia Cup competition and forcing the Whitecaps to wait a few hours to secure a playoff spot. The Timbers finished 3-1-2 against its Pacific Northwest rivals to take the Cascadia Cup. Seattle was 2-1-3, and Vancouver 0-3-3. The Whitecaps got into the playoffs when Seattle beat Dallas last night, becoming the first Canadian team to advance to the MLS postseason.
KENT, Wash. (AP) – Ashley Wagner won the women’s title in Skate America yesterday, teaming with Christina Gao for a 1-2 U.S. finish. Competing in her first Skate America, Wagner, adding a well-executed long program to the short program that she won Saturday, scored 188.37 points. That included 127.76 in the long program, which she performed to music from “Samson and Delilah.” She had 60.61 points in the short program. The 21-year-old Wagner finished fourth at the world championships in March in France.
