SEATTLE (AP) – Sammy Ochoa and Steve Zakuani scored first-half goals and the Seattle Sounders beat Honduras’ Marathon 3-1 last night to finish 4-0 in group play in the CONCACAF Champions League. Seattle had already wrapped up a spot in the quarterfinals. Michel Brown scored late in the first half for Marathon, and David Estrada added a second-half goal for Seattle.
SEATTLE (AP) – C.J. Wilcox scored 21 points, Andrew Andrews and Abdul Gaddy each added 14, and Washington held off defending NCAA Division II national champion Western Washington 88-78 in an exhibition game last night. The Huskies’ lone exhibition game before beginning the regular season Nov. 11 became a major headache because the Vikings would not go away.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The Portland Trail Blazers’ theme for this season is “New Dream. New Team.” After a major makeover, the team certainly looks new. But it might be a few years before the dream becomes reality. The most familiar faces on the team, All-Star LaMarcus Aldridge, French forward Nicolas Batum and Wesley Matthews will be surrounded by a young, largely untested cast, including first-round draft picks Damian Lillard and Meyers Leonard. The Blazers open the season on Oct. 31.
RENTON, Wash. (AP) – Doug Baldwin, the Seattle Seahawks’ leading receiver a season ago as a rookie, will miss Sunday’s game at Detroit with a high ankle sprain. Seattle coach Pete Carroll said yesterday that Baldwin would not play against the Lions after suffering the injury last Thursday against San Francisco, continuing a season of ailments for the second-year receiver.
PULLMAN, Wash. (AP) – Washington State University football coach Mike Leach has banned players from using Twitter. He told The Spokesman-Review players posting anything on Twitter – “and I don’t care if it says, ‘I love life” – will be suspended. Athletic director Bill Moos says he supports the coach’s decision. He says some vulgar tweets written by WSU players had been brought to his attention Tuesday but he did not address the matter with Leach. The Cougars have a 2-5 record.
SEATTLE (AP) – The Seattle Mariners have declined to pick up the option for 2013 on catcher Miguel Olivo, which will make him a free agent after the World Series. The Mariners announced the decision on Olivo yesterday. Seattle also announced that backup infielder Munenori Kawasaki has been released. Seattle’s 40-man roster stands at 39.
