Taking a look at Coast Radio Sports…
The La Salle Falcons came out on the winning end of three fourth quarter lead changes Friday night and downed the Siuslaw Vikings 22-21 to advance to the quarterfinal round of the OSAA 4A Football playoffs. Jake Thompson carried the ball 23 times for 120 yards and two touchdowns; Alex Snow had 13 carries for 97 yards and one score. North Bend is the only Far West team still in action. They beat Klamath Union 42-20 and will talk on Gladstone this week. Douglas lost to Cascade 40-21.
Prep Volleyball
The Reedsport Braves overcame a four game loss to Days Creek Saturday morning, bouncing back for a 3-1 win over the Heppner Mustangs to claim third place at the 2A Volleyball tournament in Redmond. The Braves opened the tourney Friday with a 3-2 win over Weston-McEwen.
Wakonda Running Club
Wakonda Running Club finished sixth in the team standings at the Nike Northwest Regional Cross Country meet Saturday in Boise, Idaho. The team was made up of the 4A State Championship Siuslaw Vikings… the meet was made up of the top prep cross country teams in Oregon, Alaska, Washington, Idaho, Montana and Wyoming. Mitchell Butler was 19th individually with 16:10.1. Matthew Campbell was two-tenths of a second behind Butler in 20th and Mack Marbas was 21st with a time of 16:12.8. Hayden Schaffner, Seth Campbell, Brian Schofield, and Edwin Vasquez rounded out the team.
Pac 12 Football
Like a well oiled machine, once Oregon got going Saturday night there was no stopping them as they crushed California 59-17 to remain undefeated with ten wins. In Palo Alto Oregon State fell short in a comeback bid. The Beavers lost to Stanford 27-23 and lost quarterback Cody Vaz very late in the game to a severe ankle sprain. He’ll be day-to-day say coaches and won’t work out today at all. The loss put the Rose Bowl out of reach for Oregon State, but still leaves them with a 7-2 record and three games remaining on the schedule.
The Ducks vaulted to number one in the AP poll followed by Kansas State… and the BCS rankings have K-State at the top and Oregon at number two…putting the teams as the favorites to compete in the BCS National Championship in January. But, both teams still have three weeks left in the regular season.
College Basketball
The college basketball season got underway over the weekend… Oregon State picked up a pair of wins to open the 2K Sports Classic; downing Niagra 102-83 Friday night then easing past New Mexico State last night 71-62. Oregon beat Northern Arizona 83-73 Saturday afternoon. They’ll take on Portland State this evening at 6:30… the pregame show on KCST is set for six.
