Here is the latest Washington, Oregon and Alaska sports news from The Associated Press

GOODYEAR, Ariz. (AP) – Carlos Peguero hit two solo homers and young Danny Hultzen and Taijuan Walker combined to pitch four scoreless innings as the Seattle Mariners beat the Cleveland Indians 5-1 yesterday. Indians starter Brett Myers worked three innings. He allowed a single and got seven ground-ball outs before Peguero connected in the third. Hultzen, a 2011 first-round pick, struck out four over two innings. Walker, a 2010 supplemental first-round choice, fanned two over two innings.

GOODYEAR, Ariz. (AP) – Fans were sent hurrying from their seats at Goodyear Ballpark by what turned out to be a false alarm with one out in the top of the eighth inning of a spring training game between the Seattle Mariners and Cleveland Indians. The game yesterday was delayed 5 minutes. An automatic alarm beeped loudly throughout the ballpark. The Indians stopped warmups and the umpires looked at one another. Eventually, the scoreboard showed a message reading, “False Alarm.”

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) – Second-ranked Gonzaga’s game at BYU today suddenly has national significance. With No. 1 Indiana losing to Minnesota on Tuesday, the Zags might reach the top of the AP basketball poll Monday if they can beat BYU then defeat Portland on Saturday. The feat would be unprecedented for the mid-major program from the Jesuit college in Spokane. Gonzaga has been running with the elite teams in the nation for more than a decade, and its No. 1 dreams could soon be realized.

CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) – Joe Burton’s sobs betray his menacing 295-pound frame and bright red Mohawk haircut. Big Joe, as he’s known, is winding down his basketball career at Oregon State. Last Saturday, he played his final home game at Gill Coliseum. Tonight, he’ll play in his last Civil War rivalry game. By season’s end, he assuredly will have topped 1,000 points in his career. He’s already gone over 700 rebounds and 300 assists, and he’ll become the only Oregon State player to hit all three marks.
