Here is the latest Washington, Oregon and Alaska sports news from The Associated Press
SEATTLE (AP) – Jose Altuve drove in four runs and hit one of Houston’s five homers, and the Astros broke out of their offensive slump with a 16-9 win over the Seattle Mariners last night. After totaling nine runs during a six-game losing streak, the Astros scored nine in just six outs and won for the first time since opening night. The smallest crowd in Safeco Field history saw the Astros batter Seattle rookie starter Brandon Maurer and continue their offensive onslaught against reliever Kameron Loe.
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) – Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson has announced a new investor to help fill the role vacated by billionaire Ron Burkle in the city’s bid to keep the Kings from moving to Seattle. Johnson said at his weekly news conference yesterday that Sacramento developer Mark Friedman has joined the group. The announcement comes a day after Burkle backed out because of a conflict of interest stemming from his ownership stake in Relativity Sports, which manages some NBA players’ careers.
SEATTLE (AP) – Brady Quinn is the new backup quarterback for the Seattle Seahawks after agreeing to terms with the club. Quinn’s deal was announced by the team yesterday. Quinn beat out three other quarterbacks: Matt Leinart, Seneca Wallace and Tyler Thigpen. The four QBs worked out for the Seahawks on Monday. Quinn emerged the winner and the backup to Russell Wilson. Quinn spent last season with the Kansas City Chiefs. He started eight games with the Chiefs, but threw eight interceptions.
SEATTLE (AP) – Star Washington tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins has been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol. The Seattle City Attorney’s Office filed the misdemeanor count against him Tuesday, saying his blood-alcohol level was 0.18 percent, more than twice the state limit of .08 percent for driving. Seferian-Jenkins was arrested March 9 following a late-night car accident. A police report said he had a bloody nose consistent with hitting his face on the windshield and the strong odor of alcohol.
CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) – Obum Gwacham (oh-BOOM’ GWAH’-chem) already knows he can jump. What he wants to do is prove he can be an impact receiver for the Oregon State Beavers. The two-sport athlete is redshirting this season as a high jumper – even though Oregon State doesn’t officially have a men’s track and field team – to give his full attention to football. His dedication comes at a good time for the Beavers as they face the coming season without Markus Wheaton, who figures to go high in the NFL draft later this month.
MEXICO CITY (AP) – Santos Laguna advanced to the final of the CONCACAF Champions League for a second straight year after drawing 1-1 against the Seattle Sounders last night. Colombian Carlos Darwin Quintero scored on a free kick after 20 minutes, but Lamar Neagle tied it in the 72nd for the MLS team. Neagle’s goal added a touch of drama to the final minutes, but the Mexicans were able to endure for a 3-2 aggregate edge in the home-and-home series. Seattle lost 2-1 at home in the first leg.
