SEATTLE (AP) – Jason Bay hit a two-out RBI single in the 13th inning, lifting the Seattle Mariners to a 4-3 win over the Texas Rangers that snapped an eight-game skid. Bay came through after he was robbed of a game-winning homer in the 11th, when David Murphy leaped above the fence in left-center to catch Bay’s drive. Yoervis Medina worked out of a jam in the 13th.
LOS ANGELES (AP) – Kristi Toliver scored 17 points to lead six players in double figures as the Los Angeles Sparks routed the Seattle Storm 102-69 in both teams’ season opener last night. Nneka Ogwumike (ah-GWOO’-mih-kay) had 15 points for the Sparks. Camille Little scored 13 points to lead Seattle, which is playing without Lauren Jackson (hamstring) and Sue Bird (knee).
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – Freshman Emily Lockman allowed two runs on eight hits over seven innings and Nebraska defeated Oregon 4-2 yesterday to advance to the Women’s College World Series for the first time since 2002. Lockman struck out five for the 14th-seeded Huskers who fell 4-3 in 11 innings to the third-seeded Ducks in the earlier game yesterday, setting up Game 3.
SASKATOON, Saskatchewan (AP) – Nathan MacKinnon had three goals and two assists to lead the Halifax Mooseheads to their first Memorial Cup title, 6-4 over the Portland Winterhawks. Konrad Abeltshauser scored twice and had an assist and Martin Frk added a goal and two assists for Halifax. Nicolas Petan, Seth Jones, Brendan Leipsic and Ty Rattie scored for Portland.
