SEATTLE (AP) – Jordy Mercer hit a go-ahead single with two outs in the ninth inning and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Seattle Mariners 4-2 yesterday. Neil Walker hit a two-run homer off Felix Hernandez to put Pittsburgh ahead in the fourth. Seattle tied it in the sixth on Raul Ibanez’s team-leading 18th home run.

UNDATED (AP) – The NCAA has stripped Oregon of a scholarship in each of the next two seasons and placed the program on probation for three years, following improper involvement with a recruiting service. The NCAA’s Division I Committee on Infractions released a report yesterday that said former coach Chip Kelly failed to monitor the program for its conduct with Willie Lyles his Houston-based recruiting service.

FRISCO, Texas (AP) – Darlington Nagbe had a goal and an assist to lead the Portland Timbers to a 3-2 win last night over FC Dallas in the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open Cup. Portland scored all three of its goals in an 11-minute span in the second half to take a 3-1 lead. The Timbers’ Frederic Piquionne scored the decisive goal in the 72nd minute after he intercepted a pass from Dallas defender Wallace Zimmerman.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The Portland Trail Blazers hope to strike gold for a second consecutive year during tonight’s draft. A year ago, Portland used the No. 6 pick to select Weber State guard Damian Lillard, who became the NBA’s Rookie of the Year. The Blazers pick at No. 10 this year.

SUNRIVER, Ore. (AP) – Rod Perry won the PGA Professional National Championship yesterday at Sunriver Resort, shooting a 3-under 69 for a three-stroke victory. The 39-year-old Perry, the PGA head pro at Crane Lakes in Port Orange, Fla., had four birdies and a bogey on the Crosswater Club course to finish at 10-under 277. Ryan Polzin finished second at 7 under, closing with a double bogey for a 71.
