Here is the latest Washington, Oregon and Alaska sports news from The Associated Press

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) – Brendan Ryan hit a two-run double in the sixth and added an RBI single in the eighth, and the Seattle Mariners beat the Oakland Athletics 5-3 yesterday. Michael Morse and Brad Miller homered for Seattle, which overcame an uneven start by Hisashi Iwakuma to beat the A’s for the fourth time in the past five games between the division rivals.

RENTON, Wash. (AP) – Two years ago, J.R. Sweezy was playing defensive tackle at North Carolina State. Now, he’s a starting offensive guard for the Seattle Seahawks. Sweezy had been battling with John Moffitt for the starting job at right guard. Through two preseason games, the Seahawks have seen enough from Sweezy to declare him the winner of the competition.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Cole Grossman scored in stoppage time and Real Salt Lake played to a 3-3 draw against the Portland Timbers to remain in first place in Major League Soccer’s Western Conference. Grossman’s goal in the 93rd minute came after Kalif Alhassan scored in the 86th minute for Portland. With the tie, the Timbers pulled even with the Colorado Rapids for second place in the conference standings.

TUKWILA, Wash. (AP) – Clint Dempsey has a good feel for what makes a big rivalry. He played in two of the biggest in England during his time in the Premier League with Fulham and Tottenham Hotspur. Even Dempsey is impressed by what Sunday could bring when 67,000 fans are expected to watch him make his home debut for the Seattle Sounders against rival Portland.
