HONOLULU (AP) – Isaac Fotu led four players scored in double figures with 17 points as Hawaii beat Oregon State 79-73 in the fifth place game of the Diamond Head Classic yesterday. Garrett Nevels had 16, Christian Standhardinger 15 and Brandon Spearman added 14 for the Rainbow Warriors. Roberto Nelson scored 22, Devon Collier added 13, 10 rebounds and Challe Barton chipped in with 13 points for the Beavers.
CLEVELAND (AP) – Mike Hegan, a former major league player who was a longtime broadcaster with the Cleveland Indians, has died. He was 71. The Indians say Hegan had his family by his side when he died yesterday morning in Hilton Head, S.C. The son of former Indians catcher Jim Hegan made the AL All-Star team with the Seattle Pilots in 1969 and helped the Oakland Athletics win the 1972 World Series.
FAIRBANKS, Alaska (AP) – Calling all interpreters. The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reported yesterday that organizers with the 2014 Arctic Winter games need volunteers who can interpret several Arctic languages into English. Other languages to be represented at the Games include Finnish, Greenlandic and Sami, spoken by the people of the northern Scandinavian region of Sapmi.
LOS ANGELES (AP) – Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade had 23 points apiece, and the Miami Heat beat the Los Angeles Lakers 101-95 yesterday for their sixth straight win. Bosh also had 11 rebounds in the Heat’s fifth consecutive victory against the Lakers on Christmas Day. LeBron James added 19 points and Ray Allen had 12. Los Angeles was hurt by a poor shooting night in its third straight loss.
HONOLULU (AP) – DeAndre Kane scored 23 points and No. 14 Iowa State overcame its worst half of the season to beat Boise State 70-66 yesterday in the Diamond Head Classic championship game. Kane hit a 3-pointer with less than 2 minutes left to help seal the win for the Cyclones. Boise State’s Derrick Marks had a chance to tie with less than 30 seconds left, but missed a 15-foot jumper.
