Oregon pulled away in the second half and cruised to an impressive 87-66 win over BYU in the second round of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament yesterday.  Elgin Cook, playing in front of a hometown Milwaukie, Wisconsin crowd, scored a career high 23 points and was eight-of-nine from the field for number seven seed Oregon who will face number two seed Wisconsin tomorrow at 4:45.  That game will air on KCST beginning at four pm.

On the softball diamond…

Five errors in the fifth inning led to seven runs for Cottage Grove and the Lions edged the Siuslaw Vikings 9-7 yesterday in Florence.  Coach Sean O’Mara said all-league catcher Ashlee Cole was in mid-season form already; going three-for-four at the plate with two doubles, two RBI and two runs scored.  Freshman pitcher Heidi Jones went the distance in the circle, giving up six hits and striking out three.

On the track…

Ashlee Cole crossed 27th street and continued her big day, winning the Shot put with a throw of 32-feet; seven inches.  She was second in the Javelin.  Other individual wins for the Vikings at the Siuslaw Ice Breaker were Sierra Potter in the 800 meters, Celie Mans in the 15, and Mikaela Siegel in the 100-meter hurdles.

For the boys, Jonathon Peterson claimed the 400; Seth Campbell the 800; and Mack Marbas won the 15-hundred; and defending state champion Billy Jones won the Long Jump.
