Beavers Sweep the Ducks; Take the Pac-12 Baseball Lead

The Beavers had the brooms out over the weekend, downing the Ducks in all three games at Goss Stadium in Corvallis.

Jace Fry capped the weekend with an eight-inning; one-hit 7-1 victory yesterday.

The number five ranked Beavers won the first two games 3-1 and 4-2.

Oregon State is now at the top of the Pac-12 standings with a 14-and-4 conference record.  Washington, the previous occupant of the top spot, dropped to second place.  The Huskies took two out of three from Washington State and are at 16-and-5.

Prep Track and Field

Four Siuslaw Viking athletes competed Saturday at the 50th Centennial Invitational in Portland.  Celie Mans ran a career high 10:40.14 in the three-thousand.  She finished 17th in the field.  Mack Marbas was 6th in the boys three-thousand in 8:46.23; Mitchell Butler 13th.  Seth Campbell was tenth in the 800 meters.

Athletes from nine different schools competed on the track at Hans Peterson Field Friday afternoon in the Central Coast Invitational.  North Bend won the boys’ team title; Dallas the girls’.

Mikaela Siegel set a new school record in the 100 meter hurdles, winning the event with a time of 16.06 seconds.  She was also second in the 300 meter hurdles in 48.64 seconds;  and… second in the long jump at 15-feet; 4-and-a-half-inches.

On the boys’ side of things, Jonathon Peterson came from behind down the stretch to win the 400-meters.  Randall Greenburg did the same in the 15-hundred.  Greenburg was also second in the three-thousand.  Billy Jones won the long jump with a mark of 21-feet; 9-and-a-quarter inches.  Joe Dotson stumbled twice in the 300 meter hurdles but still pulled out a second place finish.

Siuslaw Softball

On the softball diamond… The South Umpqua Lancers took both halves of a Far West double-header in Myrtle Creek over the Siuslaw Vikings… 10-nothing and 14-4.

Baseball “makeups” set for this week

Viking baseball had been scheduled to host South Umpqua for a Far West League double header Friday… but were rained out.  Those games are set for Wednesday, three pm at Jiggs Dodson Field in Florence.  They’ll make up a previously missed game against North Bend this afternoon at home.  Airtime on Coast Radio Sports is at 3:45; 1st pitch at four.

The Vikings have six games on four dates in all this week; the makeup this afternoon against North Bend; tomorrow’s regularly scheduled single game at Sutherlin; the double header Wednesday against South Umpqua; then wrapping up the week on the road again, this time in Coos Bay against Marshfield for two.
