Here is the latest Washington, Oregon and Alaska sports news from The Associated Press
ATLANTA (AP) – Hisashi Iwakuma combined with two relievers on a six-hit shutout and the streaking Seattle Mariners beat the Atlanta Braves 2-0 to complete a two-game sweep. Cole Gillespie and Kyle Seager hit run-scoring singles. Seattle has won five straight, matching its longest winning streak of the season. Iwakuma (4-2) gave up only six hits with seven strikeouts and no walks in seven innings.
SEATTLE (AP) – Since joining the Seattle Mariners after the 2008 season as their director of amateur scouting, it seems all Tom McNamara has known is making picks at the top of baseball’s amateur draft. He would like to see that trend change at some point. It would be a sign that the major league product is having more success on the field. Instead, Seattle will have pick No. 6 overall in the first round of today’s amateur draft.
TORONTO (AP) – A U.S. federal judge has ruled a subpoena can be issued compelling former Vancouver Canucks owner John McCaw Jr. to testify in Steve Moore’s lawsuit against Todd Bertuzzi and the team. Moore is suing Bertuzzi and the Canucks for $38 million for a 2004 on-ice hit that ended Moore’s career.
LOS ANGELES (AP) – Justin Williams scored 4:36 into overtime after a turnover by Dan Girardi, and the Los Angeles Kings beat the New York Rangers 3-2 last night in the Stanley Cup finals opener. Jonathan Quick made 25 saves for the Kings, who moved one victory closer to their second Stanley Cup title in three years after a hair-raising finals opener.
